Zachary Piper Solutions is seeking a Transportation Software Engineer to support a groundbreaking research and development program advancing automated, connected, and intelligent transportation technologies. The Transportation Software Engineer will contribute to next‑generation traffic modeling, simulation, and autonomous systems research in McLean, VA through 100% full onsite presence.
Responsibilities of the Software Engineer include:
- Perform traffic analysis across roadway links, intersections, and networks to assess safety and efficiency
- Design ITS and traffic‑management solutions including smart signals, sensors, and automated control systems
- Build and run traffic modeling and simulation scenarios, including hardware‑in‑the‑loop and software‑in‑the‑loop environments
- Develop Python scripts and API integrations to automate simulations, data flows, and system interactions
- Test and validate traffic models, simulations, and ITS hardware/software through unit and integration testing
- Improve or extend existing software tools and prototype new research‑driven concepts
- Contribute to system architecture and documentation, collaborating within an Agile team using JIRA and Confluence
Qualifications of the Software Engineer include:
- Strong proficiency with Python in Linux; C++ experience preferred
- Experience developing unit and integration tests to support CI pipelines
- Ability to build data interface adapters (e.g., JSON ↔ XML) and integrate with APIs
- Proficiency with Git and collaborative software workflows
- Basic understanding of robotics and autonomous systems concepts
- Must meet Public Trust requirements: U.S. Citizen or Green Card, plus 3 years of recent U.S. residency
- Preferred: experience with C++ on Linux, autonomous systems algorithms, research prototyping, software architecture, and Agile tools (JIRA/Confluence)
