Zachary Piper Solutions is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer – Launch Operations to join our team in Midland, TX. In this role, you’ll play a key part in preparing spacecraft for launch by leading the mechanical integration and handling of satellites. You’ll work closely with internal engineering teams, launch vehicle providers, and ground support personnel to ensure safe and successful pre-launch operations. This is a hands-on, field-based role that requires strong mechanical engineering skills, excellent communication, and a proactive mindset.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the on-site mechanical engineering lead for satellite integration with launch vehicles.
- Oversee mechanical integration, handling, transportation, and final mating of satellites to launch vehicles.
- Work directly with launch providers and ground teams to ensure all mechanical requirements are met.
- Develop and execute mechanical procedures for launch site activities such as lifting, securing, pressurization, and environmental enclosures.
- Support spacecraft launch campaigns, including final checkouts, troubleshooting, and resolving mechanical anomalies.
- Ensure mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE) is used safely and effectively.
- Maintain detailed documentation and reporting of all launch site activities.
- Ensure all hardware and procedures meet safety, quality, and launch provider standards.
- Collaborate with mission assurance teams to verify readiness.
- Work closely with systems, electrical, and software engineers to support integrated operations and resolve issues.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- At least 5 years of experience in satellite launch operations or satellite integration and testing.
- Experience with launch vehicle integration and satellite mechanical systems (structures, thermal, deployment mechanisms, etc.).
- Familiarity with environmental testing and spaceflight hardware.
- Proficient with mechanical CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Creo.
- Knowledge of aerospace materials, fasteners, and ground support equipment.
- Strong understanding of launch site safety procedures and environmental controls.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in high-pressure environments and travel domestically and internationally for launch campaigns, sometimes for extended periods.
- U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency required.
- Must be able to pass a background check to access Cape Canaveral, an active U.S. military base.
Compensation:
Salary range is $146,000 to $165,000 depending on experience. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package with medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off, federal holidays, and sick leave.
